Time to Accept and Act on Recommendation of Human Rights Commission – January 28, 2004

The National Council of Women of Canada

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE…

Ottawa
January 28th, 2004
“TIME TO ACCEPT AND AND ACT ON ON THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION FOR TREATMENT OF FEDERALLY SENTENCED WOMEN”

“The Key Findings of the report reflect all the points the Coalition has taken,” says Margaret MacGee, NCWC Special Representative to the Coalition.

“The Canadian Human Rights Commission has grasped the need for change in the needs assessment process- Aboriginal women and women with disabilities will benefit most” A key recommendation will be the creation of a security classification tool explicitly for federally sentenced women. I am really pleased that that they are recommending that maximum security women be allowed at the Healing Lodge” Margaret adds.

NCWC notes with approval that the Commission recommends that classifying all women offenders sentenced for first or second degree murder as maximum security risks should be rescinded immediately.

NCWC supports all the recommendations and urges that the Minister take immediate action to implement the proposed changes. NCWC stresses the importance of facilitating the treatment and employment training programmes so that federally sentenced women can re-integrate into society.

‘This is a good outline for the long-overdue and promised reforms in the treatment of federally sentenced women, but will it take another decade or more to make these changes real?” asks Catharine Laidlaw-Sly, President NCWC, adding, “What is needed is political will on the part of the Minister and the Government”.
