Nellie McClung was an author and orator, a former teacher, and a prominent suffragist. In 1918, she tried to persuade the church to ordain women, but the church resisted and it was not until 1936 when the United Church of Canada consented to the ordination of women. Nellie was elected as a Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly in 1921. Although in an opposing party to Irene Parlby, Nellie often worked closely with Irene to achieve their common goals.
